Hand Surgery Q & A

What is hand surgery?

Hand surgery is an umbrella term used to describe several different surgical procedures designed to restore hand and finger function.

Dr. Kindl and the team at New Orleans Orthopedic Institute regularly perform hand surgery to address:

  • Hand injuries
  • Rheumatic diseases
  • Degenerative changes
  • Infections of the hand

Dr. Kindl and the team also perform hand surgery to treat problems or congenital disabilities present at birth.

Are there different types of hand surgery?

At New Orleans Orthopedic Institute, Dr. Kindl and the team offer several different  types of hand surgery, including:

Carpal tunnel release

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, you might benefit from carpal tunnel release. During carpal tunnel release surgery, Dr. Kindl carefully cuts through the ligament in your hand that’s pressing down on your carpal tunnel. This process makes room for your median nerve, improving pain and function.

Trigger finger surgery

If your thumb or finger locks in a bent position, you might benefit from trigger finger surgery. During this type of operation, Dr. Kindl cuts a small incision in your palm. Afterward, he cuts the tendon sheath, which impedes your finger’s movement. After cutting the sheath, Dr. Kindl moves your finger around. If the motions are smooth and fluid, he carefully stitches your hand back up.

Tendon repair

Tendons are strong fibers that connect your muscles to your bone, but they aren’t invincible. If you tear a tendon, develop an infection, or suffer trauma, Dr. Kindl might recommend tendon repair surgery to prevent further damage.

Joint replacement

Joint replacement, or arthroplasty, is a type of surgery used to address problems caused by arthritis. During this type of surgery, Dr. Kindl replaces a damaged or infected joint with a prosthesis. Modern artificial joints are made of several different materials, including plastic, silicone, metal, and rubber.
